Qualcomm to make new Snapdragon Wear chipsets for smartwatches – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In May this year, tech giant Google announced the integration of its wearable platform Wear OS with Samsung‘s Tizen OS. At its annual developer conference Google announced a unified Wear OS platform. Now, Qualcomm has made announcements on the hardware side.
The chipset manufacturer has shared how it plans to help the new wearable ecosystem. Qualcomm revealed that its planning to revamp investments in wearable technologies and chipsets. The company plans to roll out new Snapdragon Wear chipsets over the next year.
“Our Snapdragon Wear platforms have become the de-facto standard in the industry with smartwatches for kids, seniors, and adults and smart trackers for pets and accessories,” said Pankaj Kedia, senior director and global head of the wearables segment, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “We are significantly growing our investments in leading edge silicon, platforms, and technologies and plan to roll out new Snapdragon Wear platforms across segments over the next year to meet our long-term vision,” Qualcomm said in a statement.
Along with this, the company also announced the launch of its ‘Wearable Ecosystem Accelerator’ program. With this program Qualcomm aims to help OEMs in speeding up the development and commercialisation of wearables.
Qualcomm will help in connecting wearable hardware and software providers through this program. “Our goal is to provide a vehicle in the industry where ecosystem partners collaborate to deliver the differentiated wearable experiences and inject new energy and innovation in this exciting space,” added Qualcomm.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s chief thinks that by next year his company will have a chip for laptops that will compete against the custom-designed central processor chip introduced by Apple.
This new chip introduced by Apple claims to boost the battery life of the device.
Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano Amon told Reuters, he believes his company can have the best chip on the market, with help from a team of chip architects who formerly worked on the Apple chip but now work at Qualcomm.
