Still thinking about buying an Xbox Game Pass subscription? This is your friendly reminder to get it done soon, as the service will soon be getting its first price increase since its original launch six years ago.
Starting tomorrow, Xbox Game Pass will be rising to $10.99 monthly, a one dollar increase from its previous rate of $9.99. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which brings with it a host of unique features, will cost $16.00 – a two dollar increase. PC Game Pass will remain at $9.99.
The price increase will go into effect tomorrow, July 6, for new subscribers. Existing subscribers will see their rates go up on August 13. The Xbox Series X|S is also seeing its price rise in some regions, though not in the U.S.
The rise follows Xbox CEO Phil Spencer’s acknowledgement that Game Pass growth is growing and that it has the potential to cannibalize sales. Game Pass has been under the microscope since its inception, with Xbox trumpeting it as a new distribution paradigm and PlayStation boss Jim Ryan claiming that publishers don’t like it.
It roughly coincides with the return of Grand Theft Auto 5 to Xbox Game Pass – its third stint on the service. It last appeared on Xbox Game Pass back in August 2021. It will be joined by Sword and Fairy: Together Forever (July 5) and Exoprimal (July 14).
