The New Zealand women’s rugby sevens team will play Great Britain, Kenya and Russia in their pool at the Tokyo Olympics.
New Zealand beat both Kenya and Great Britain on the way to claiming the silver medal at Rio 2016, while Russia ended the Black Fern’s record-equalling 37-match winning run on the World Series with a 17-17 draw in Kitakyushu in April 2019.
The Russian Olympic Committee team secured their Olympic debut via this month’s Repechage.
Rio gold medalists Australia are grouped with China, Japan and the United States, while Canada, bronze medalists in Rio, are joined by France, Fiji and Brazil.
The New Zealand men’s team has been grouped with Australia, Argentina and South Korea.
The All Black Sevens and Australia met in the final of the last World Series event in Vanvouver, with New Zealand winning 17-14 in their way to the overall title.
Argentina finished sixth in Rio, while South Korea will make their Olympic debut.
South Africa, bronze medallists in Rio, and USA are in Pool C along with Kenya and Ireland.
The rugby sevens event, which made its debut in 2016, will be held from July 26-31 at Tokyo Stadium.
The New Zealand women’s and men’s teams will be finalise this week.
