The games of the future might come from the past as NVIDIA’s latest tool provides huge leaps in the world of modding.
While the entire gaming world was fixated on the reveal of the RTX 40 series graphic cards and DLSS 3, the company also introduced players and modders to NVIDIA RTX Remix, as part of the NVIDIA Omniverse.
With this free tool, modders can now remaster supported DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 titles with fixed function graphics pipelines. The tool uses AI and its custom RTX Remix Runtime to convert assets from classic games to the open 3D framework, which can further be operated in the 3D pipeline of the NVIDIA Omniverse platform.
As the tool is part of the Omniverse platform, modders can easily replace or work on these assets by importing them to several apps like Adobe Substance 3D Painter, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, SideFX Houdini, and Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.
Furthermore, with the help of AI Super Resolution, the NVIDIA RTX Remix also improves the art remastering process by converting textures by up to 4X. This allows modders to create 4K quality textures, which originally had a resolution of 1080p. Finally, the textures from these classic titles can be further worked on to include ray tracing, which provides realistic lighting and shadows to any scene.
During its reveal, NVIDIA showcased the RTX Remix’s prowess by using its magic on Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, which released back in 2002. With the help of its latest tool, the company reimagined a scene from the title with improved textures, realistic physical properties for the assets and ray tracing as well.

Other than The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, NVIDIA will be providing an even bigger playable experience for fans, which demonstrate the RTX Remix’s magic with Portal with RTX DLC. The DLC will release in November, and it will be available to purchase for free for Portal owners.
With the RTX Remix tool, modding will breathe fresh air into some of the best classic games of all time. While developers continue to push out remastered titles for their various franchise, NVIDIA’s new tool will provide newfound power to modders on several communities to take upon projects that will continue the shelf life of their favorite games. So, expect to see many classic titles to be vastly improved with new lighting, textures and assets from the modding community in the near future.
