For years, video game adaptations were considered a curse to the film and TV industry, with several projects failing to be successful both critically and commercially.
However, times have changed, and recent projects such as The Last of Us series, Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog have changed perceptions.
So far, the biggest success on the movie side of things has been the recently released, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film adaptation of the iconic Nintendo franchise is on course to earn $1 billion, which makes it one of the most successful films of all time.
With Mario setting the stage, Nintendo now has an opportunity to expand by showcasing its other franchises, and that seems to be the case, according to the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto.
In a recent interview with Nikkei, Miyamoto stated that Nintendo will soon have more productions. “Please keep an eye on our next production,” said the Mario creator (translated via VGC). “Nintendo is like a talent agency. We have many other entertainers.”
Miyamoto has claimed that it plans on using its other “well-known” characters for future movie adaptations. At the moment, some of its popular franchises include The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Super Smash Bros. Even the Mario film has characters with spinoff potential. This includes Donkey Kong, Bowser, and more.
While Miyamoto has teased the future of Nintendo films, the iconic designer has stayed mum on what the projects in question might be.
