According to sources, the medicines were stored instead of distributing them, and now they must be disposed of.
As per the rules, if a medicine is not distributed due to non-requirement, they must be sent to other hospitals where they are needed. A doctor said that the primary duty of any government hospitals concerning handling of medicines is that it has to timely audit the remaining stock of medicines and notify the higher authorities about the expiry date.
“If a particular medicine is going to expire soon, the authorities must take steps to send them to other hospitals where those medicines are needed,” the doctor added.
There is a serious allegation against MIMS authorities that they have not audited the stock of medicines since last 10 years. Had some doctors at the MIMS not forced the patients to buy them outside, the medicines supplied by the government could have been utilised, said social worker Nagaraju.
When contacted, MIMS director Dr Harish M R said an audit is being carried out on medicine stock. “The exercise includes medicines that have expired,” he said.
