Marvel Releasing WandaVision Steelbook Edition With No Actual Disc

Marvel fans grew excited over the weekend at the Comic-Con announcement of a steelbook edition of Disney+ exclusive WandaVision before realising it doesn’t come with a disc.

As reported by The Direct, Marvel Studios unveiled the WandaVision steelbook that comes with a slip case, character cards, postcards, an envelope, and folder, but no actual disc (or seemingly even a code) to watch WandaVision on.

The steelbook is therefore just a collectible for Marvel fans to sit on their shelves next to the steelbook versions of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, but the actual show will remain exclusive to those subscribed to Disney+.

While subscription service streaming has become the norm for TV series and even a lot of films, it does mean those lost simply cease to exist. Willow, for example, was removed from Disney+ less than six months after it ended, and now can’t be watched anywhere. The steelbook offered a solution to this problem for a moment, before fans realised there’s no Wandavision actually included.

“This is honestly really pitiful, and it’s also terrible that they don’t even have a mention of a lack of any discs here,” said a user on ResetEra. “As someone still buying movies and TV on discs, the only reason I buy Blu-ray or UHD discs is for the (hopefully) high bitrate disc and to know I’ll always have it to watch whenever,” added another.

WandaVision ushered in a new era of the MCU as the first (of many) TV shows. Though no other steelbooks have been announced, it’s likely Marvel will also release follow-ups including She-Hulk and Secret Invasion, though WandaVision is considered among the better TV show entries.

In our 8/10 review, IGN said: “WandaVision is the MCU at its most bold and experimental, exploring human themes through creative sitcom homages.”
