Marvel Finally Confirms a Werewolf By Night Halloween Special at D23, First Trailer Shown

After almost a year of speculation, Marvel has confirmed that its Disney+ Halloween Special is an adaptation of Werewolf By Night.

Revealed at D23 2022, the D23 trailer opened with black and white footage reminiscent of a 1940s horror movie. The cast is shown in a spooky mansion, with a monster raging in a cage while surrounded by soldiers. The last shot is of a werewolf, played by Gael Garcia Bernal attacking Laura Donnelly, who will play Elsa Bloodstone.

Talking about the movie, director Michael Giacchino said that Werewolf by Night was inspired horror movies from the 1930s and 40. He also compared the movie to Poltergeist, saying that it will have “the right level of scares.”

We first heard about the project last year, when Marvel was said to be on the search for a star. We subsequently heard that composer Michael Giacchino was taking on director duties.

Werewolf by Night is the name adopted by two separate characters appearing across the pages of Marvel comics. The first, Jack Russell, debuted in a 1972 issue of Marvel Spotlight. The series ran for a total of 43 issues and one of those featured the first appearance of Moon Knight, who is now set to headline his own Disney+ show with Oscar Issac in the titular role. The second incarnation of the character, Jake Gomez – a young man with a cursed family – was introduced in 2020.

Werewolf by Night will be out next month. For the rest of our Marvel D23 coverage and everything announced, check here.
