Mamata Banerjee denied permission to attend convention in Nepal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was denied permission by the Ministry of External Affairs to visit Nepal, where she was invited by the Nepali Congress to participate in a convention, starting December 10.

Banerjee was scheduled to attend the three-day convention at Kathmandu from December 10-12 on the invitation of the Nepali Congress, the largest party of Nepal. It is not known why she was denied permission. “This is revengeful politics. Mamata Banerjee is the most prominent face of the Opposition in the country. But she is being denied permission to participate in the convention,” Kunal Ghosh, Trinamool state general secretary and party spokesperson, said.

BJP leader Jay Prakash Majumdar said, “Politics must not be brought into this. There must be some reason why the West Bengal Chief Minister has been denied permission to visit Nepal.”

Prior to this, she was denied permission to visit a peace convention titled “Peoples as Brothers, Future Earth” in Rome on October 6 and 7 this year. The invitation was sent to her on July 22, acknowledging “her contribution to the cause of social justice and her commitment to the underprivileged and the disadvantaged”. However, she was denied permission by the Ministry of External Affairs.

In 2018, Mamata didn’t get clearance to attend a Chicago event, organised to mark 125 years of Swami Vivekananda’s historic speech at the World Parliament of Religion. Another trip to China had to be cancelled as she did not receive the Centre’s permission.
