The Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event recap video was released on YouTube, commemorating the release date of the original game back on March 22 2002. The video also revealed the release date of the final chapter of the Dark Road saga, which will be 26 August.
The video also revealed that the Kingdom Hearts series has sold over 35 million units worldwide with Kingdom Hearts III alone selling 6.7 million copies worldwide, making it the highest-selling game in the series so far. Director Tetsuya Nomura teased that a lot of mysteries will be resolved and revealed in the upcoming update. The setting of the final chapter will be Scala ad Caelum, a location that isn’t freely visitable in the mainline games.
The ending scene shows a mysterious hooded figure and a baby Xehanort. They are both sitting by the fire on Destiny Island, and the hooded figure said that there is still so much left to tell. The earlier announcement video of the anniversary event was shown again, with a focus on the part about the magic mirror. Nomura has said there were already hints left that players can use to theorize about what kind of answers they might receive in the future update.
Kingdom Hearts Dark Road was first released on Junge 22, 2020, focusing on Masters Xehanort and Eraqus’s time in Scala ad Caelum. The game takes place centuries after Kingdom Hearts Union X and after the events of the Keyblade War. After this final chapter, the new game Kingdom Hearts Missing Link will be released later on mobile platforms, and it will be the first game in the mobile series to be fully playable in 3D with action gameplay identical to the console games.
The recap video also teased that Kingdom Hearts IV would be developed using Unreal Engine 5, even though the latest trailer was created using Unreal Engine 4. The creators ask players to not only look at the future of Kingdom Hearts through the fourth sequel but everything else they have in store for the fans. An English website for the anniversary is now available to visit, with many posters, galleries, and messages from the development team.
