IPL 2022: Virat Kohli should don captaincy hat again, RCB won’t get anyone better – Harbhajan Singh

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh said he won’t be surprised if Virat Kohli takes over captaincy of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League 2022 and continues for a couple of years. Harbhajan listed out options for RCB captaincy but said the former finalists are unlikely to find anyone better than their former skipper.

RCB retained as many as 3 players ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. They retained Virat Kohli for Rs 15 crore, Glenn Maxwell for Rs 11 crore and Mohammed Siraj for Rs 7 crore but are they did not name their captain for the new season.

RCB will head into the auction with a purse of Rs 57 crore and there are options for captaincy candidates but Harbhajan believes Kohli can be the right man if he is willing to do the job once again.

Notably, Kohli stepped down as RCB captain after IPL 2021, bringing an end to his 8-year-tenure as skipper without winning a title in the premier T20 competition. Kohli also gave up T20 captaincy, highlighting workload management. He was also sacked as India’s ODI captain after which he stepped down from Test captaincy in January this year in an unforeseen decision.

Harbhajan Singh said Shreyas Iyer, who is one of the 10 marquee players for the IPL 2022 auction, can be a good fit at RCB but none like Kohli.

” “Despite having many big names, RCB is a team who is yet to lift the title. AB de Villiers won’t play this season and Kohli has stepped down from captaincy… so they need to find a captain now. Among Indians, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are the two names who can efficiently lead the team,” Harbhajan said while speaking in his YouTube channel.

“Shreyas has already shown his captaincy prowess while leading the Delhi franchise. But I think Kohli will have to don the captaincy hat again. RCB won’t get a better leader than him,” said Harbhajan.

“RCB is making a new team and they will search for a good leader. But does Kohli want to take up the role? It will be a big challenge but I won’t be surprised if he agrees to be the captain for the next 1-2 years,” he added.

OVERSEAS PICKS FOR RCB CAPTAIN?

Ishan Kishan, who was not retained by Mumbai Indians, is also up for grabs at the IPL auction for a base price of Rs 2 crore.

Harbhajan also said that the likes of David Warner, Aaron Finch and Eoin Morgan are good overseas pick for RCB captaincy if the team is looking in that direction.

Harbhajan, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the last 2 seasons, highlighted the efficiency of Morgan as the skipper in the IPL. The World Cup-winning England captain was not retained by KKR while SunRisers Hyderabad let go of their former captain, Warner.

“Talking about overseas options, David Warner is the best pick. He will captain the side and score runs as well. Aaron Finch is also a player who can lead the team. He may have not performed exceptionally well with the bat but RCB can rope him as a captain. RCB can also look for Eoin Morgan. I’ve played under Morgan in Kolkata Knight Riders and he’s got a composed attitude. But according to me, Kohli’s return to captaincy is the best option for Bangalore,” Harbhajan added.

The IPL 2022 auction will be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.
