The launch of the Indian National Basketball League was announced on Thursday in Bengaluru by the Basketball Federation of India. The league aims at making basketball grow and reach the rural areas in the country. The league has been much awaited and has been in demand for the last two years.

The league matches are likely to start in January 2022 post the basketball senior nationals tournament. Nine of the best men and women’s teams from the nationals will feature in the league. In INBL there will be no foreign players with the league exclusively focussing on local talent.

Basketball Federation of India President Dr K Govindraj said “This (INBL) was my dream for a long time. After all the issues and problems we have come across, now India will be able to see more and more basketball and the sports will become more popular too.

“I want India to feature in more international events, but for that our players need to have more competition and opportunities. Then only we will be able to reach that goal. We also need more infrastructure, which also makes a lot of difference to improve the standard of basketball or any other sports.”

On November 20, the league will be inaugurated by the Karnataka Governor and Chief Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, in Bengaluru. The event will see a bunch of celebrities taking part in the inaugural event.
