Indian Government Recognises Esports As Part of Multi-Sports Events

The Indian government has made a significant move for the esports space in the country. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has included esports in the category of “multisports events,” and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has added a section related to “matters relating to online gaming.”

Recently, the Indian government revealed it has no plans to limit the amount of time spent on online gaming. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, responded to questions from MPs Vishnu Dutt Sharma and Bhagirath Chaudhary, who asked whether the government was considering limiting the time spent by gamers under 18 to three hours per week, similar to China’s regulations.

Chandrasekhar emphasised that the government is aware of the potential risks and challenges of online gaming, such as violence and addiction, and has implemented rules requiring intermediaries to prevent the sharing of harmful information and to comply with existing laws. However, there will be no limitations on the time spent on online gaming.
