Google starts rolling out a new operating system Fuchsia OS – Times of India

Internet search giant Google has rolled out a new operating system — called Fuchsia — to its first-generation Nest Hub device, according to a report by 9to5Google.
The report says that the company has revealed to them that it is rolling out an update to the first-generation Nest Hub devices that were launched in 2018.
The report elaborates that this new update is not supposed to alter any of the functions of the Nest Hub but rather make changes “under the hood” as it changes the Linux-based “Cast OS” to Fuchsia OS.
The Fuchsia-based update for the Nest Hub is scheduled to roll out over the coming months and will be first available to those in the Preview Program and later to everyone.
“Today’s release marks Google’s biggest public step toward Fuchsia being an operating system that the average person can use. By field testing it on real devices in the wild, Google can prove that their from-scratch, “not Linux” operating system is ready to be used in the smart home as a drop-in replacement for the Cast OS,” added the report.
Future Google plans about Fuchsia OS are unknown at the moment.
However, the report did suggest that smart home is just one of many avenues that Google has explored for Fuchsia. It is apparently capable of powering both desktops and smartphones, even natively running Android apps.
“It’s not just phones and PCs. In the world of IoT, there are an increasing number of devices that require operating systems and new runtimes and so on. I think there’s a lot of room for multiple operating systems with different strengths and specializations. Fuchsia is one of those things and so, stay tuned,” Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google SVP of Android, Chrome/OS, Play, and Photos.
