Google Drive gets the ability to block spam users – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In May this year, Google promised to roll out a solution that will address the issue of spam on Google Drive. The company officially announced that it is rolling out the ability to block people in Drive.
You just have to right-click on a shared file to reveal the new option as the second last option in the menu. The blocked users will not be able to share the uploaded items with you and the Drive will also hide any earlier consent sent to your account.
“Drive’s sharing capabilities fuel productivity and collaboration, but bad actors can abuse tools that are meant to facilitate helpful sharing. That’s why it’s important to have the necessary security controls in place to fend off these sharing threats”, Google said in a blog post.
The feature is available for both Google Workspace customers and personal account holders. The company has started the rollout today and it will be available to all the users in the coming weeks.
User blocking will help protect Drive users in three ways:

  • Block another user from sharing any content with you in the future. This can be a useful control if, for example, another user has a history of sending spam or abusive content.

  • Remove all existing files and folders shared by another user. This is an easy way to get rid of all spam or abusive content shared by a specific user at one time.

  • Remove another person’s access to your content, even if you’ve previously shared it with them.

Meanwhile, Google is rolling out ‘Backup by Google One’ as an update over the existing Android backup service that now means end users only have to be aware of one sync to the cloud. Android backups currently cover app data, SMS messages, call history, contacts, and device preferences — including Wi-Fi networks and passwords, wallpapers, display settings (brightness and sleep), language and input settings and date/time.
