God of War Ragnarok has been quiet because the team is “heads down”

Cory Barlog shared a quick status update

One of the modern PlayStation greats, God of War (2018), turned four years old today! In a video message from Cory Barlog, the director thanked fans for showing up — “it is your support that allows us to keep doing the things that we love to do” — and spoke about the incoming sequel, God of War Ragnarok, which is still scheduled for a 2022 release.

Four years? The passage of time is scary, isn’t it?

God of War Ragnarok, the elephant in the room,” began Barlog. “We haven’t said a lot about this — that’s because everybody [at Sony Santa Monica] is heads down, hard at work. We are perfectionists. Everyone is tightening up the graphics on level three.”

“There is so much going on right now that I just wish that we could share it with you,” he continued — but God of War Ragnarok is “just not ready to be shown.”

“I guarantee you the moment — the very second that we have something that we’re ready to share — we’re going to share it. Because we don’t want to hold any of this back. So, please, hold tight, know that something cool is coming, and that everybody here at [Sony Santa Monica] is so incredibly thankful for all of the support that you’ve given us.”

Barlog closed his remarks with a smirk: “All right… have a good 4/20.”

Prior to this “we’re still at it” check-in, our last major update on God of War Ragnarok was in September 2021, when we saw three minutes of frigid game footage at a PlayStation Showcase. At the time, there were concerns that Ragnarok wouldn’t be a big enough shakeup, which is natural with so little info to go on and so much space for speculation.

Given God of War (2018)’s smash success and continued adoration — and all the hard work that went into figuring out how to even reboot this series — expectations are high. We’ll see how the dust settles later this year, assuming the release window sticks.

I can’t wait to be reunited with the Boy.
