God of War Is Great On PC, But PlayStation Is More Reliable

It’s been a few days since God of War was released on PC, and the game has been an absolute treat for PC gamers out there.

A few years ago, if someone would say that PlayStation would be porting its exclusives to PC, every person would term it as something impossible. However, it all changed with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn, and since then, God of War has become the seventh title to be ported on PC. We have another one coming up in the next few days, with the release of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which will be completing the octet.

In the past few years, I have played an unhealthy amount of games, to the point that most new games don’t excite me anymore. However, with God of War, it was quite a different experience altogether. Having grown up playing the entire franchise, there was obviously that nostalgia factor governing my bias towards the game. When I started playing the new God of War though, it was nothing like its predecessor, so the nostalgia factor was pretty much gone. However, what it delivered was much more than a game, an experience rather, and that has made it one of my favorite games of all time, right beside The Witcher 3.

Considering how much I adored the title, it was quite obvious that I was going to give it another shot when it was released on PC. Now before I jump into elaborating my experience with the game, I would like to highlight the specifications of my PC.

  • Ryzen 5 2600 @ 3.9 Ghz
  • 8x 2 DDR4 3400 Mhz RAM
  • 512 GB M.2 NVMe SSD
  • RTX 2070 Super

As soon as I started the game, I was awestruck by how beautiful it looked on the PC. I tried the game on the PS4 Pro and it looked quite good as well, but playing it on Epic Settings at 60 FPS was a totally different experience altogether. However, that was just momentary, and I did face a lot of issues soon after that.

God of War Is Great On PC, But PlayStation Is More Reliable

As soon as Kratos and Atreus started their journey, my game crashed. I thought it was a one-off thing, but then it repeated multiple times. I tried updating my graphic card drivers, but it didn’t fix the issue. Eventually, I had to reinstall the game, and this time around, it worked pretty well. I was quite elated to embark on the immersive journey, but the moment I reached the top of the mountain, I started facing performance issues.

Now I know, everything on Epic might be too much for the PC I used, but it worked pretty well for a good section of the game so I thought that should continue for the remaining as well. Eventually, I had to look up the best settings and tweak the ones which took a heavy toll on performance. Even though the performance became quite stable after that, at times the game started stuttering, and the only way I could fix it was restarting it. Initially, I thought this was something that I was facing due to some reason, but then I saw ACG highlighting the same issue as well.

Now it’s not that God of War is not playable on PC, or all these issues are not solvable. It is not a broken mess like Horizon Zero Dawn was for many PCs. But one thing that needs to be highlighted is that the PlayStation has been much more reliable for me. I wasn’t bothered about updating graphic drivers, my PC overheating, or finding the best settings on the console. At times, one would just want to simply plug and play and avoid all the hassles. Surely, the experience on PC is unparalleled, but if I am looking for a hassle-free experience, I’d definitely choose to play God of War on a PlayStation console.
