Germany eases travel ban for 5 countries including India – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Germany is lifting the entry ban and easing the travel ban for five countries from Wednesday. This will pave the way for thousands of Indians with German work/ study permits to travel.

The TOI on July 3, 2021, first reported that over 1,500 Indians with employment in Germany, which includes engineers, researchers, managers, and data scientists are stuck here due to travel restrictions due to the pandemic situation. 101 of these scholars and employees with institutions in Germany wrote to the ministry of external affairs and the German government for exemptions.

As per an earlier notification by German Missions in India, the “The new Ordinance on Coronavirus Entry Regulations (“CoronaEinreiseV”) came into effect as of May 13, 2021, and has been extended until July 28, 2021,” and “With effect from April 26, 2021, the Federal Republic of Germany designated India as a country with a significantly elevated risk of infection (virus variant area).

On Tuesday morning, Walter J Lindner, German Ambassador to India tweeted, “Promised to work hard on easing travel restrictions for travelers from IND and update you immediately. And voila: from tomorrow on GER is removing the entry ban and easing travel rules for 5 countries where the Delta variant is widespread, including IND! Details soon on the website….”

Welcoming the decision, Ratan Lal Agrahari from Lucknow who is scheduled to join a German firm in Frankfurt as a support executive said: “This is a big relief to thousands like us who would have not only lost our opportunities for work and study in Germany, but many of us would have been jobless as well.”

Due to the travel restrictions, many had to defer their joining for months. What made the situation worse as many were on the verge of losing their jobs and research funds as “the European Union and the German laws do not allow us to start working remotely.”
