French Open prize money to increase | Tennis News – Times of India

PARIS: The winners of this year’s singles events at the French Open stand to earn 2.2 million euros ($2.32 million) each, the organisers announced on Wednesday.
After two years affected by Covid-19 when the prize-money dipped it is now almost on a par with 2019 when Rafael Nadal and Ashleigh Barty pocketed 2.3 million euros each for their wins.
The overall prize money for this year’s Roland Garros, which runs from May 22 to June 5, has gone up to 43.6 million euros, “an increase of a little over 6.8 percent in comparison to 2019, the last edition of the tournament held in normal circumstances,” said organisers.
Overall prize money for the men’s and women’s singles (main draw) is 1.43 percent higher than in 2019.
More will go to those in qualifying and in the first round of the main draw “to help the players who have suffered the most as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic”.
The pairs contesting the men’s and women’s doubles are playing for 6.1 percent more money than in 2019, with each winning pair taking home 580,000 euros.
The winning mixed doubles pair will receive 122,000 euros.
The prize money awarded in this year’s quad wheelchair singles and doubles competitions has been brought into line with the wheelchair events.
