Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Launches In Early 2024 On Two Discs; New Trailer Debuts

Summer Game Fest closed with our first look at Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second game in the rebooted FF7 trilogy. The trailer showed the main cast exploring the wider world outside Midgar, following the events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake–including some familiar faces from the original FF7 that we didn’t see in the first game. It’s coming in “early 2024.”

The trailer had the cast learning about the Lifestream and pondering what prompted Sephiroth’s return, as well as the appearance of Elena, the youngest member of the Turks. It also gave us a lengthy look at combat, along with cruising along the world in style on the backs of chocobos. The first game established a new continuity for the series, and this looks to continue that. Major characters like Tifa are confused about what happened in the intervening five years, including some notable disparities between realities.

Now Playing: Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth Gameplay Trailer | Summer Game Fest 2023

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been developed under a cloud of secrecy, as this next chapter in the Remake trilogy features a new storyline that isn’t bound to the events of the original Final Fantasy VII. Co-director Motomu Toriyama has said that Rebirth will be an even bigger divergence from the established story, and Cloud will embark on an “unknown journey” that will conclude in the untitled third game in this trilogy.

As for what you can expect from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, producer Yoshinori Kitase described the middle chapter of the trilogy as an “even more gripping and memorable experience” than Final Fantasy VII Remake, and in June 2022, co-director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the game was in full production.
