Despite the immense controversy around her personal politics, Evangeline Lilly says that she has always been respected by Marvel, and there has never been an indication she’d be fired due to her political stances.
Lilly, who plays the Wasp in the MCU, has been facing backlash due to her support of anti-vaccine talking points. In January 2022, the star participated in an anti-vaxx rally in Washington, D.C. to show her support of “bodily sovereignty.” She also has posted anti-vaxx messages onto her social media accounts, including a post on Instagram saying: “I believe nobody should ever be forced to inject their body with anything, against their will, under threat of violent attack, arrest or detention without trial, loss of employment, homelessness, starvation, loss of education, alienation from loved ones, excommunication from society…under any threat whatsoever.”
Nevertheless, Lilly assures that Marvel was always supportive of her as their Hope van Dyne. Lilly has been with Marvel ever since 2015’s Ant-Man, and she currently stars in the newest MCU film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, directed by Peyton Reed. On a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lilly said that Marvel has never told her how to live her personal life.
“They’re very respectful,” Lilly said. “In fact, I’ve had direct conversations with them that I have instigated and they’ve always said, ‘That’s not our business. That’s not for us to tell you how to live your life or what opinions to have.’ And I actually even got a really supportive phone call from Peyton Reed at one point and just saying like, ‘Just so you know, there’s some rumors spreading about Marvel ditching you or canceling you. And that didn’t come from Marvel and that didn’t come from us, so just ignore that.’”
Lilly’s portrayal of the Wasp has proven to be an important character in the MCU, and it seems that she is here to stay. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is currently in theaters and drawing mixed reviews, with IGN’s Joshua Yehl giving the film a 7/10.
Yehl notes that Lilly’s character is particularly miniscule in the new installment (pun intended): “Unfortunately, Michael Douglass’ Hank Pym doesn’t have much to do this time around, and there’s even less for Evangeline Lilly’s Hope – which feels strange for a character who’s mentioned in the title.”
Lilly also recently talked to Esquire magazine about her personal positions, saying that she was aware that her social media posts would spark controversy. She said that she asked herself “about 600 times” whether or not she should post photos from the aforementioned rally.
“I know the beast that I’m attacking,” Lilly continued. “I know that I have a little pebble and there’s this fucking Goliath giant. If I shoot this pebble, it’s going to wake the giant.”
