Unai Simmon saved two penalties to help Spain seal a spot in the semi-finals to win the man of the match said his Swiss counterpart Yann Sommer deserves to be awarded the Star Player of the Match despite Switzerland’s heartbreaking defeat in Euro 2020 quarter-final.

Sommer came up with a string of diving saves throughout the match to keep the Spanish at bay as the Swiss hung to a 1-1 draw after extra time. Spain’s Gerard Moreno, in particular, squandered four chances by poor finishing or the acrobatics of Sommer.

“Honestly? I’d have given Star of the Match to Yann Sommer..,” Unai Simón, refreshing in his point of view, said.

“We have to go into the semi-final fresh, confident and with our heads high. We have to win the UEFA EURO now,” Simmon added.

Simon also elaborated on his post-game celebrations with manager Luis Enrique.

“I have come a little up in the celebration, but it is what my body told me to do. It was a moment of euphoria.”

“Just like we had to erase the memory of that mistake in the last match, it’s time to quickly forget this triumph because we face a tough rival in the next match.”

Mikel Oyarzabal struck the decisive spot-kick after Gerard Moreno and Dani Olmo had converted for Spain and Sergio Busquets and Rodri squandered their kicks.

Spain keeper Unai Simon saved from Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji and Fabian Schar while Ruben Vargas hammered his shot over the bar.

In normal time, Spain took an eighth-minute lead when a Jordi Alba strike took a heavy deflection off Daniel Zakaria and went into the net. It was the 10th own goal of the tournament – more than at all the other Euros combined.
