Dune: Awakening, an Open World MMO Survival Game Has Been Announced by Developers Funcom

There’s new Dune stuff to talk about, and no, it doesn’t involve the sequel to the 2021 Oscar-nominated film by Denis Villeneuve.

Instead, fans will have more of the Frank Herbert-created universe in a new open world MMO survival game, which was announced yesterday at Gamescom 2022 Opening Night Live.

Titled “Dune: Awakening”, the MMO game set in the Dune universe is currently being developed by Funcom. The Norwegian developers are known for their work in the MMORPG genre with titles like Secret World Legends and Age of Conan.

In the trailer that debuted during the show yesterday, we received a glimpse at the desert planet of Arrakis, which is filled with the massive Sandworm that will gobble up anything that comes its way.

Since its a MMO survival game, players will essentially be running the lucrative spice trade out of Arrakis. Spice is quite necessary in the Dune universe, which is why the trade needs to run at a constant space.

Other than the spice trade, players will also have to mind how to traverse the dangerous desert terrain of Arrakis. Along with maintaining and upgrading their stillsuits, the heavy sandstorms will require players to build shelters as well.

Control the spice trade out of Arrakis in Dune: Awakening.

Characters can also be upgraded using the spice that’s been traded out of Arrakis. With power in the palm of a player’s hand, they can choose to create peace, conflict with different factions that would lead to different scenarios.

Dune: Awakening hasn’t received a release date yet. However, it will be available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
