Does Max Have Powers in Stranger Things Season 4?

Stranger Things has finally dropped the trailer for Season 4, hinting at a brand new powerful enemy and one ex-Hawkins resident, Max Mayfield, who seems to have developed her own set of psychic powers.

After nearly 3 years since the premiere of Season 3, Stranger Things has officially released a date for the Season 4 premiere. This time, we’re getting a look at the characters’ lives in a new town; though far they may be from Hawkins, their fight with the creatures from the Upside Down is long from over.

One of the most exciting scenes in the new trailer featured a familiar face with some unfamiliar abilities. Max Mayfield, sister to Billy Hargrove and close friend to the main crew, appears to have developed some psychic powers of her own.

NEW POWERS IN STRANGER THINGS SEASON 4?

In short, it seems the Season 4 trailer is heavily hinting that Max Mayfield does indeed have powers. The trailer begins with Max kneeling at her brother Billy Hargrove’s grave, picking up after his death in Season 3. She narrates part of the trailer, hinting that Max may play a bigger role in Season 4 than in previous seasons.

Then, in a scene at 2min. 36 seconds, we see Max levitating in front of Billy’s grave. She rises into the air with her hands out at her side, causing Dustin, Lucas, and Steve to fall to the ground in shock.

Max Levitates in front of Billy’s Grave

Keeping in mind Billy’s connection to the Mind Flayer in Season 3, it’s entirely possible that Max has gained some kind of connection to the Upside Down. We’ve already seen powerful enemies control the minds of other Hawkins residents, so it isn’t a stretch to think that Max has some kind of tether to Season 4’s enemy.

Towards the end of the trailer, we also see Max in the same bright blue windbreaker running in a mystical blood-red environment. Behind her, a clawed hand stretches – one that looks strikingly similar to the skeletal enemy revealed in the trailer. Here, it further implies that Max has a connection to the Upside Down and its creatures. Given this, she may have developed powers in Stranger Things Season 4.

Additionally, fans are already speculating that this new enemy may also have a connection to Billy, which would explain Max’s increased involvement. Fans have noted that the enemy, thought to be Vecna, sort of resembles Billy post-Mind Flayer fight, and that Vecna’s pose mimic’s Max’s when she levitates.

FIRST SEEN IN THE STRANGER THINGS MOBILE GAME?

While this is the first time the TV series has seen Max with powers, the Stranger Things mobile game has actually previously hinted towards a powered-up Max. The game, Stranger Things 1984, featured a playable character “Mad Max,” based on Max Mayfield. The character’s ability? Psychic Blast.

Though Psychic Blast is decidedly different from levitation, it seems that the Stranger Things team has long decided that Max will one day have powers. Whether she’ll be using her abilities to fight off enemies like Eleven is yet to be seen, but it sets up an exciting new element to the upcoming season.

Stranger Things Season 4 is set to release on Netflix on May 27th.
