Almost 20 years later, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is getting a sequel with Vince Vaughn returning to star in it and likely produce.
Deadline broke the news today, and a source close to the production confirms to IGN that Vaughn is working on the project. According to the Deadline report, the movie is in early development and will have Jordan VanDina writing the script. He’s previously worked on projects such as Hulu’s The Binge.
The original 2004 movie was written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, but it’s still unclear if he’ll return to direct the sequel. Currently, Vaughn is the only actor confirmed to reprise his role. In addition to Vaughn, it featured actors such as Ben Stiller, Justin Long, and Christine Taylor. The only plot detail known about the upcoming Dodgeball sequel is that it’ll pick up after the Average Joe’s victory in the dodgeball tournament.
It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time a Dodgeball sequel has been reported. Last November, Justin Long said that Ben Stiller’s approval is the only thing stopping a sequel. In an interview, he said, “I hope that it ends up happening, but I think Ben is a little, what he told me on that podcast was that he’s a little trepidatious about doing a sequel to something so beloved, something that people enjoy so much that.”
In Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, a group of everyday people band together and sign up for a dodgeball tournament to prevent their gym from being purchased from a corporate health fitness chain.
In our Dodgeball review, we said that “The cast is pitch perfect, from Vince Vaughn as the reluctant leader to Ben Stiller’s ridiculous pumped-up fitness guru. Vaughn and Stiller play off each other so well, with such a relaxed flow to their humor that the laughs they garner seem effortless.”
