Discord Bars Indie Developers Rusty Lake From Claiming a Username Because of How the New System Works

Earlier this month, Discord announced that it was soon to roll out new features, which included usernames without numbered discriminators. However, this doesn’t seem to be sitting too well with the users. Very recently, an indie developer took to Twitter to elaborate on their frustrations regarding the new username format. A change.org petition too is in motion, aimed at bringing back the numerical discriminators. Here’s more.

Rusty Lake facing trouble selecting Discord username as ‘rustylake”

Indie developers Rusty Lake, known for making horror and mystery games were the ones deprived of being able to claim the username ‘rustylake’ on Discord. This happened as Discord sent an email informing Verified Owners that they could submit new usernames, and Rusty Lake applied.

In their Twitter thread, they draw attention to the fact that Rusty Lake is a server owner with more than 240,000 members on the platform. Additionally, they also mentioned that they now have a “risk of impersonation + extra legal costs to file a possible trademark infringement.”

Reports now suggest that this is a problem that has been faced by even streamers like “pewdiepie” and “ksi”. Discord had to step in to reserve the usernames for the celebrities. Discord users are now running a change.org petition demanding the return of discriminators in the username. Discriminators are the four digits that one can spot in the last part of a username on Discord.

Fabulous Fox who started the petition writes, “The update is ugly, inconvenient, and will make things a lot more difficult than they need to be for the actual users. Change is NOT always better. Don’t fix what isn’t broken.”

Rusty Lakes still hasn’t received any constructive solution to them not being granted their username from Discord. On reaching out to Discord, Rusty Lakes has received an automatic response. They now expect to be redirected to another helpdesk. However on 7th May, they’ve updated that they’re yet to “receive any actual help from @discord on this matter”.
