With the quickly approaching start of Diablo 4’s first season, many players are asking about how the season will work. They may have heard that rather than playing through the campaign again, there will be new quests and mechanics to explore for each season. This begs the question, how much progress will carry over from your hard work in the Eternal Realm?
Luckily, the development team has been very forthcoming with this information. They’ve done several streams going over Altars of Lilith, Map state, and even side quest completion – in short, some of your progress with carry over into each Season, but not all of it. Keep reading to learn everything that carry over from other characters into your Season playthrough in Diablo 4.
Campaign Progress
First and foremost on everyone’s minds is whether you’ll have to play through the campaign again each season. While this was a prominent part of seasons in Diablo 3, it won’t be in Diablo 4. To the relief of many a busy gamer, you will be able to skip the campaign on Seasonal Characters as long as you’ve beaten it at least once in the Eternal Realm.
If you are one of the players that enjoyed replaying the campaign during Seasons, then you will of course have the option to do so. Simply select playing through the campaign when making your Season Character. There is no downside to this approach, other than taking a bit longer to reach the new content. However, unlike reaching level 100 after launch, Seasons are not a race.
Side Content & Renown Progress
From Altars of Lilith, to Aspect dungeons, to side quests Diablo 4 is chock-full of optional content. Some of this content will remain completed when you create a Seasonal Character, however, some will reset.
Map State
The map in Diablo 4 is designed to be revealed piece by piece, going from blank to fully filled in. Each new area results in a small amount of Renown, with over 70 areas in the Fractured Peaks zone alone. During your Seasonal playthrough, expect to have your map carry over from your most progressed Eternal Character.
Altars of Lilith
Altars of Lilith are a massive power boost to your character in the early levels, as they give raw stats that add up. Perhaps because finding them again would overly frustrate players, developers have decided to carry over Altar of Lilith progress across Realms. Not only will you retain the bonuses for each Shrine, but you’ll also have the Renown.
Side Quests
The Side Quests in Diablo 4 are not only a great way to collect Renown, but are also excellent for Worldbuilding. In line with players experiencing Sanctuary anew, all side quests will be reset in the Seasonal Realm. Play your favorites again for nostalgia, or get your hands on an interesting piece of gear.
Strongholds & Dungeons
All Strongholds and Dungeons will be reset at the beginning of the Season, including those Strongholds which unlock a Waypoint. This reportedly, allows developers to integrate new Aspects and drops into the content and incentivizes players to complete them again.
Waypoints
Only the Kyovashad Waypoint will be unlocked at the beginning of your Season journey. This decision may disappoint players who don’t want to go for a leisurely stroll around Sanctuary, but is a decision mandated by resetting Stronghold progress.
The Codex of Power & Aspects
Your progress in collected Aspects from the Codex of Power will not carry over into the Season. This is due to dungeons being reset, as well as Aspect collection being a key part of Season Content. On the plus side, there will be several Season exclusive Aspects for you to try out, which is a great way for developers to shake up the meta.
Is Stashed Gear Shared With Seasonal Characters?
Unfortunately, you will not be able to set aside gear for your Seasonal Character by playing on the Eternal Realm. The Stash for Seasonal Characters will not be shared with Eternal Characters until the Season is over when all characters are moved to the Eternal Realm. Instead, everyone will start fresh for a true early-game experience.
Will The Mount Be Available On Seasonal Characters?
After zooming around Sanctuary on your horse, it can be painful to go back to walking. With this in mind, developers have decided to forgo making players unlock the mount again during Seasons. As long as you have unlocked the mount on an Eternal Character, you should have a horse right from the start in the Seasonal Realm.
