MUMBAI: The heavy winds of the cyclone Tauktae, which hit the city, felled the around 16 feet long sightscreen at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Churchgate, and the BKC Sharad Pawar Recreation Centre in BKC on Monday.
“The sightscreen towards the famous North Stand at the Wankhede Stadium fell, as a result of the gusts of wind today. It had last fallen during the 2011 World Cup too. It’s not a big deal, we will use ropes and all to erect it again,” a source in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) told TOI.
The Wankhede Stadium staged 10 games in IPL-2021, before it was postponed indefinitely due to a breach in the league’s biobubble, with many players getting struck by covid.
Catholic Gymkhana ground floor flooded
The heavy rain flooded not just all the gymkhanas on the Marine Drive, but also the compound of the Catholic Gymkhana, which has been turned into a Covid Care Centre by the BMC since March 30, after the onset of the second wave of Covid-19.
“I just spoke to the guard. Water has entered the hall on the ground floor. Five patients have been shifted from the ground to the first floor,” said Norbert Pereira, the honorary general secretary of the Catholic Gymkhana.
“The centre doesn’t have an ICU facility, though the doctors are available round the clock. “There are 80 beds in the centre, with 50 beds for men (in the ground floor hall) and 30 for women on the first floor, but perhaps due to the low testing in South Bombay, only six patients are there currently at the centre,” said Pereira.
