Covid-wary admn to seek Centre nod for pvt hospitals on indl plots – ET HealthWorld

Covid-wary admn to seek Centre nod for pvt hospitals on indl plotsChandigarh: A flailing private health sector has stirred the UT administration to plan moving the Centre to resume conversion of industrial plots to set up hospitals in Industrial Area. The push for upgradation follows the deadly second wave of Covid that had caused shortage of beds and overwhelmed the health facilities.

“The matter may be sent to the ministry of home affairs to take permission to open the policy that was allowed from 2005 to 2008,” according to a letter UT administrator V P Singh Badnore has sent to six department to improve health facilities, especially in the private sector. Only two hospitals have come up in Industrial Area so far.
“The administration had permitted conversion of plots from industrial to commercial for three years. A draft proposal may be prepared to seek the ministry approval for conversion. But each case needs to be decided individually as road and traffic demand needs to be managed and norms laid down,” Badnore said. “The industrial estate has many plots. A total of 82 plots were allowed conversion to commercial category, including hospitals, but only two hospitals came up. The available industrial plots, which are already converted, can be used for setting up hospitals,” Badnore added.

Sources said government health facilities were upgraded according to norms from time to time in the recent past, while the private health sector has struggled. Big hospitals have come up in neighbouring cities, expanding with a passage of time. “It is high time to think about improving the private health care facilities in Chandigarh too,” sources said.

The UT has claimed allowing new hospitals would improve the infrastructure in the private sector. “To meet the demand, a few NGOs and charitable institutions have temporarily set up mini Covid care centres,” the letter said.
