Chepauk Super Gillies edge past Trichy Warriors to retain Tamil Nadu Premier League crown | Cricket News – Times of India

CHENNAI: Defending champions Chepauk Super Gillies retained their crown as they scored an eight-run win over Ruby Trichy Warriors in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Sunday evening.
Chepauk’s third TNPL title was set up by opener N Jagadeesan (90, 7×4, 2×6) who helped the side notch up 183 for 6. Trichy stayed in the chase right till the end, thanks to a late charge by their No. 7 Saravana Kumar (45 n.o., 3×4, 3×6), but Chepauk’s left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore (1-30) defended 13 runs in the last over, giving away only four, as the Kaushik Gandhi-led side reigned supreme.
“I am happy to finish on the winning side but I thought we could have bowled a lot better. Jagadeesan played a fantastic knock but as a bowling unit, it wasn’t our best performance,” said Sai Kishore at the end of the match.
A target of 184 proved to be a tall ask for Trichy. Openers Amit Sathivik (36, 1×4, 5×6) and Santosh Shiv (16) gave Trichy a flying start as they added 40 in 3.2 overs. But once medium-pacer Sonu Yadav (2-32) accounted for the two,
Trichy’s chase began to lose steam. Nidhish Rajagopal (26), Antony Dhas (13) and Adithya Ganesh (10) got off to starts but couldn’t go on to convert it into something substantial. By 13.4 overs, Trichy found themselves at 108 for 6.

However, the Rahil Shah-led team didn’t throw in the towel yet and remained in the game thanks to the seventh-wicket stand between Saravana Kumar and M Mathivannan (13). The two added 50 runs from 26 balls and when Mathivannan departed, Trichy needed 26 off the last 12 balls. Saravana’s lusty blows brought the equation down to 13 from the final six balls, but he couldn’t go on to wrap things up for Trichy.
The first half belonged to Jagadeesan whose 58-ball blitz was the highlight of Chepauk’s innings. The wicketkeeper-batsman continued with his good vein of form this season and finished with 336 runs from 10 games.
After being inserted in, Jagadeesan and Kaushik Gandhi (26, 2×4, 1×6) got Chepauk off to a good start , adding 58 runs in six overs, before the latter was cleaned up by medium-pacer M Poiyamozhi (2-37).
Jagadeesan subsequently added 43 for the third wicket with U Sasidev (12) to keep Chepauk’s scoreboard ticking. Jagadeesan was measured in his approach till he reached his third fifty of the tournament — and 17th overall — before cutting loose.

Jagadeesan had his share of good fortune when he was dropped on 26 by Adnan Khan at cover off Poiyamozhi in the sixth over with the team total on 57.
Barring that blemish, Jagadeesan was in great touch. He was decisive in his footwork and fluent with his shot-making. He was particularly severe on medium-pacers Saravana Kumar and Poiyamozhi, hitting them for 30 (from 11 deliveries) and 21 runs (12 balls) respectively.
Once Jagadeesan’s innings concluded in the 18th over, Harish Kumar (13) and Sonu Yadav (17 n.o.) added 28 for the 6th wicket in 13 balls to help Chepauk finish with a strong total.
Brief scores: Chepauk Super Gillies 183-6 in 20 overs (Kaushik Gandhi 26, N Jagadeesan 90; Rahil Shah 2-31, Poiyamozhi 2-37). Ruby Trichy Warriors 175-7 in 20 overs (Amith Sathvik 36, P Saravanakumar 45 n.o.; Sonu Yadav 2-32, Sai Kishore 1-30). Chepauk won by 8 runs.
