Besides HappyFresh, here are 9 other grocery delivery services in M’sia to try

With Indonesian-based grocery delivery service HappyFresh temporarily suspending all its Malaysian operations recently, loyal users of the app will now have to look for alternative ways to shop for their groceries.

A Reddit user shared that they have been using HappyFresh since 2020, and another agreed, saying that they haven’t “stepped into a supermarket since the pandemic” because of HappyFresh’s services.

To help out HappyFresh customers who are now looking for other options while HappyFresh undergoes internal restructuring, we’ve compiled a list of alternative grocery delivery services in Malaysia and highlighted how they fare in various criteria.

Note: To estimate the price point of each app, we decided to look at how they price a 1L carton of Farm Fresh dairy milk. While this is not indicative of the overall pricing structure of every product in each app, it does give us a rough idea of what their different price points might look like.

Perhaps one of the most obvious choices for grocery delivery, GrabMart is Grab’s on-demand everyday goods delivery service.

GrabMart can be found on the Grap Superapp. Here, you’ll find various grocery stores, including Jaya Grocer, which Grab had acquired earlier this year.

For those who are in a rush, GrabMart features a “Groceries delivered in 30 minutes” section where you can get free delivery on your household needs and essentials speedily.

Other than Jaya Grocer, Grab also has its own GrabSupermarket, a delivery-only dark store by Grab.

To briefly explain the difference, GrabMart is an aggregator of various stores and offers instant delivery, while GrabSupermarket features a next-day delivery feature for those who don’t need their items immediately.

However, Grab has also rolled out a instant delivery version of the GrabSupermarket that works just like any other shop in GrabMart.

Instead, you can opt for next-day delivery (free delivery with a wider range of traditional supermarket produce), or instant delivery (similar but smaller range of products, with delivery fees based on distance).

Coverage area: Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Melaka, Ipoh, Negeri Sembilan, Kuantan, Miri, Sungai Petani

Price of a 1L carton of Farm Fresh dairy milk: RM7.90 on Jaya Grocer, RM7.80 on GrabSupermarket

Even the most loyal of HappyFresh users must now look for other venues to get their groceries.

Thankfully, there is quite a variety of e-grocers out there, though a majority of them are mainly based in the Klang Valley.

At the moment, HappyFresh Malaysia only seems to have a few of its HappyFresh Supermarkets operational, while all deliveries from its partner merchants are unavailable, as we learnt on September 9.

It remains to be seen what will happen with HappyFresh in the coming months, but until then, these alternative grocery deliveries could be worth trying, if you’re not keen on the idea of going back to in-person grocery shopping.
