A recent leak of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon has indicated that the game will support multiplayer matches with up to six players at once. The leaked information comes from an image that was posted to Twitter and features what is alleged to an unreleased case for the game, featuring Japanese text.
According to the leaker, the case, which was “spotted in the wild” — although the specifics of its origins are left up to the reader’s speculation — mentions up to six players being able to participate at one time in multiplayer modes. The leaker also claims that the embargo for Italian journalists will be lifted next week, suggesting that more information is likely forthcoming at that time.
The developers have not issued an official stance on whether multiplayer will be included, but it wouldn’t be a first for the series. The original Armored Core, released in 1997 for the first PlayStation console, garnered praise from critics for its inclusion of multiplayer options, and the reliance on multiplayer action as part of the overall experience seems to have only increased with the last few games in the series. Still, if the leak turns out to be true, it is still unclear what format the six-person multiplayer action could take, although most fans who have commented on it seem to be expecting 3-on-3 team action.
As the first release in the series in nearly 10 years — Armored Core: Verdict Day released in September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 — news of potential multiplayer action in Fires of Rubicon has been met with a middling response online. Over on Reddit, some fans showed enthusiasm, such as one commenter who said “Cannot wait to get back to the chaos and mayhem that is Armored Core multiplayer.” Another expressed the belief that Armored Core’s reliance on shooting mechanics will mean multiplayer “won’t feel as bad even if it won’t be as good as Valorant or CS:GO.”
Armored Core 6 was a surprise announcement last December when it was first revealed via trailer during The Game Awards, the same awards show where its developer FromSoftware took home the Game of the Year honors for last year’s RPG smash success Elden Ring. Since then, only a smattering of information has been released for the mecha combat game, including the above story trailer released late last week, but its is due for release next month, on August 25, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
