Rekha Sethi, director-general, All India Management Association (AIMA), emphasises upon various abilities of future managers, including the ability to build and manage teams with different geographies and cultures as well as a strong focus on sustainability and environmental issues.


What are the changes you suggest for accurate testing of aspiring management students?

Over the last few years, there has been significant change in the tools and techniques being applied in the areas of testing and assessment. The increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made testing tools and systems responsive and agile. It also allows for stronger checks and controls to detect and prevent any malpractices; in turn enabling the use of more robust and reliable testing methods.

AIMA has introduced remote proctored internet-based tests to give students the flexibility to take the test from anywhere, while administrators can still ensure a safe and secure testing environment. To maintain an accurate and fool proof system, AIMA monitors and updates its testing practices, tools and content, while also keeping in step with ongoing technological advancements and changing requirements of the industry/market.

What kind of management graduates will be required in Industry 4.0?


Industry 4.0 requires more agile management techniques, which can cater to the rapidly changing requirements of today’s business environment. Some skills that young management graduates must possess to stay relevant in these times include quick decision making in adverse conditions, risk management abilities, as well as building and managing teams with different geographies and cultures, with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental aspects.


How should young managers plan to be entrepreneurs?

Entrepreneurship is a dynamic process, and becoming an entrepreneur means navigating a spectrum of stages and events that are influenced by many inherent traits and external factors. Young managers with vision, creativity, innovative thinking, high levels of determination and passion will normally excel as entrepreneurs. In addition, resilience, consistency, risk-taking ability, and self–motivation are also important characteristics to possess. Funding, marketing, and operational management are some external factors that influence the entrepreneurship process for which various channels and solutions are available.


Do you think the management curriculum should transform and integrate emerging technologies such as ML, AI, Cloud etc?

The advent of new technologies like Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), demographic shifts and the current pandemic is radically transforming the way jobs are going to be performed in organisations and the type of skills management graduates will require to thrive in this new age of work. New age managers are expected to be ardent users of technology and also active participants in the design and development of new technological solutions. In this changing paradigm, business schools and universities must integrate upcoming fields such as ML and AI, Cloud etc into their curriculum.
