HIGHLIGHTS

  • India beat New Zealand by 73 runs in the 3rd T20I to clean sweep the 3-match series vs New Zealand
  • Aakash Chopra urged Team India to “always open” with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul
  • Chopra also expressed concerns about Team India’s “middle-lower order”

Former opening batsman-turned-cricket pundit Aakash Chopra pointed out three major takeaways from the recent India-New Zealand T20 international series after the hosts’ 73-run win in Kolkata.

Chopra urged the Indian team management to persist with captain Rohit Sharm and KL Rahul as the openers before expressing concerns at the “middle-lower order”.

He also praised finger spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel and Mitchell Santner for their performances in Jaipur, Ranchi and Kolkata.

“Major takeaways from #IndvNZ series

“1. Rohit-Rahul must always open. Don’t think of left-right or match-ups.
“2. Finger spin can work in T20s. Ashwin-Axar-Santner. And it’s okay for LAS to bowl to LHB.
“3. India’s middle-lower order far from sorted. Will take time,” Chopra tweeted before elaborating on his third point.

The 44-year-old went on to add that India must stay patient with the current crop of middle-order batsmen as it will take time to sort their final combination out in this format.

“On the 3rd point—In T20s—it’s easiest to find 1-2-3. Everyone wants to bat there. It’s incredibly difficult to find 5-6-7. You get to bat only in two circumstances—either your team is 30-3 or you get 5-10 balls to tonk. It’s a long arduous journey. Stay patient with your choices,” Chopra wrote.

India won the first T20I in Jaipur by five wickets and the second in Ranchi by 7 before registering a win after setting a target for the first time in the series at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

It was the sixth time India has won a T20I series with a 3-0 margin, joint top with Pakistan, and New Zealand’s fourth biggest defeat by runs in T20 cricket.

This was also the second time in succession that India whitewashed New Zealand in a T20I series this year, after the 5-0 away triumph in February, and the third time they managed the feat against this opposition in the shortest format.
