There are many reasons to like Insomniacs After School. The romance is cute and wholesome. The art style and animation are enthralling. The voice acting is phenomenal, and it inspires a sense of wonder and awe in the audience.

Whatever the reason for your love of the show, with the first season ending, you’ll want more like it. Romance anime isn’t uncommon by any means, but Insomniacs After School has a certain vibe that’s hard to find in other anime.

10 A Place Further than the Universe

What’s more inspiring than a story about exploring the most remote region of the world, the icy deserts of Antarctica? Well, a bunch of cute high school girls are doing it, of course. All jokes aside, a Place Further than the Universe captures the same kind of wonder and brings the same kind of inspirational energy to the table that Insomniacs After School does.

9 I Want to Eat Your Pancreas

It’s hard not to notice the looming shadow of Magiri’s health in Insomniacs After School, and the same can be said of Sakura Yamauchi. However, her health issues seem to be a lot more serious compared to Magari’s relatively tame heart problems.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas isn’t a full season. It’s a movie, and the quality of the animation reflects that. It has a similar kind of whimsical romance element to it as well, and both love interests mesh incredibly well.

8 Your Lie in April

A cult classic and an inspiring music anime in its own right, Your Lie in April doesn’t fall behind in the romance category either. If you’re a fan of classical music, this is a great anime to enjoy. If you’re not a fan of classical music, this is still a great anime to enjoy.

If you’ve somehow avoided any spoilers for this phenomenal show and don’t know about its ending, you should give it a whirl and strap in for a rollercoaster of emotions.

7 Nagi no Asakura

A bit of an underrated show, Nagi no Asakura follows a ragtag group of underwater dwellers as they come to terms with modern society and their place in it. A bit more on the drama side rather than romance, Nagi no Asakura is still a fantastic watch for anyone interested in the romance genre. The gripping mystery of the slightly different reality, the thin veneer of normality, and the interesting characters all bring to fruition one of the most entertaining slice-of-life shows that you’ll see in a while.

6 Hyouka

If melancholy were a genre, Hyouka would be its top anime. It has a lot of romance and mystery elements to it as well, but the pervading feeling throughout the show is that of melancholy. The melancholy of living, the melancholy of not having close friends, the melancholy of not being able to express yourself as well as you want to.

It’s set in a high school, and the protagonist’s character development in the series is inspiring to watch. Though it doesn’t quite have a live-happily-ever-after ending, it’s close enough that you won’t feel too let down.

5 Bocchi The Rock

She is just like me, for real. Aki Hamaji took that concept and brought it to life with the titular character of Bocchi. The show has almost nothing to do with romance but everything to do with introverts who have trouble in society. If you thought you felt at home with Ganta’s nervous and awkward energy, wait till you get a load of good ol’ Bocchi.

Bocchi has its roots in the slice-of-life genre, but it dabbles in music here and there as well. If you don’t relate to being an awkward music fan with social anxiety, you might think that this isn’t the show for you, but most people will fall in love with it if they just give it a shot.

4 Asteroid in Love

There aren’t many anime focusing on the niche of astrophotography, but Asteroid in Love is one of them. If you are already in the astrophotography niche, then you’ll definitely enjoy this anime.

The anime doesn’t have widespread appeal, but it has a dedicated fanbase who are very passionate about it. The graphics and animations aren’t as great as Insomniacs After School, but it’s still a great anime for anyone who has an interest in astronomy.

3 Kokoro Connect

Another underrated anime, Kokoro Connect, puts the friendship of a bunch of high schoolers to the test by thrusting them into a series of supernatural events. It’s a mix of romance, drama, supernatural, mystery, and slice of life.

While the romance doesn’t have the same delicate feeling as in Insomniacs After School, with the relationships being more drama oriented, it is still one of the best slice-of-life anime you’ll ever watch.

2 Kaguya-sama: Love is War

With an 8.5 on IMDb, a 9 on MAL, and 4.9 on Crunchyroll, it’s safe to say that Kaguya-sama is one of the most popular and well-received anime in the slice-of-life/romance genre.

The romance in the anime is much more teasing, but the character dynamics make it worth the teasing. It focuses a lot on the slice-of-life aspect of the show, putting the romance on hold for the sake of the plot, which is refreshing at times.

1 Oshi No Ko

When people think of an anime of the year, they think of hard-hitting shounen like Attack on Titan or Chainsaw Man. But it’s not a stretch to say that the title might belong to Oshi No Ko this year. A beautifully animated masterpiece that adapts Aka Akasaka’s Seinen slice-of-life manga onto the bigger medium, Oshi No Ko is everything fans hoped it would be.

It exploded onto the scene and took the entire world by storm with just the first episode. It’s the kind of anime you want to go into completely blind, so there won’t be any spoilers about it in this entry. Let’s just say it’s not a cookie-cutter slice-of-life anime and leave it at that.
